Members of families already affected by melanoma must be very careful in the sun and to routinely monitor their skin. The presence of many moles, 50 or more, is a major risk factor. The presence of large moles, irregular moles or present from birth also increases the risk of melanoma.

Skin cancer is usually treated through surgery. However, the doctor said of course not the patient that the cancer is completely cured, because there is always a risk that the cancer recur if cancer cells have invaded parts and tissues adjacent to the tumor. Surgeons typically cut an additional round of skin tumors to reduce the risk of recurrence.

When there is chronic sun exposure for several years, the damaged skin becomes a breeding ground for the emergence of a form of skin cancer. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation increases the risk of skin cancer (but not necessarily the sole cause of the disease). It seems that the intermittent exposure (occasional) and exposure during childhood and adolescence are particularly important in the formation of a basal cell carcinoma or malignant melanoma, although the exact nature of this link is not fully elucidated. Chronic exposure to high levels of ultraviolet radiation, as in the case of persons who work outdoors, is more often associated with squamous cell carcinomas.
