In the southern hemisphere, changes in the ozone layer are far more dramatic and they are already influencing the incidence of skin cancer. In Australia, for example, where people are accustomed to go very regularly to the beach in years when ozone began to decline, rates of skin cancer are reaching dizzying heights.

Generally, tumors are formed when DNA from a healthy cell undergoes a mutation that causes the wanton proliferation of the cell (see section on Cancer). Scientists now believe that in basal cell carcinoma, a gene called PTC is damaged by UV radiation. Under normal conditions, this gene induces the production by the cell of a protein that prevents reproduction wanton. A similar scenario may be at work in the case of squamous cell carcinoma.

Over the years, the destructive effects of ultraviolet radiation accumulate. In general, the risk of skin cancer increases with duration of exposure to sunlight and radiation intensity. In turn, the intensity of radiation depends on many factors including: season, time of day, location (latitude), the altitude above sea level, reflection on surfaces (p . ex. white sand or concrete, water, snow), ozone in the stratosphere, clouds and air pollution.
